Folks in McPherson Square got a sweet treat from Michael’s Desserts on Wednesday.
Thirteen-year-old Michael Platt launched his own business, using a one-to-one model: For every cupcake he sells, he gives one away.
“I knew that I wanted to make a business, but I knew I didn’t just want to make money, I also wanted to help people at the same time.”
According to WJLA, he does this about once a month.
“I knew that I wanted to make a business, but I knew I didn’t just want to make money, I also wanted to help people at the same time,” Platt said.
When he’s not giving cupcakes away, Platt is working to end childhood hunger.
He teamed up with the No Kid Hungry campaign in D.C., and the proceeds from his bake sales go a long way.
“Through the work NKH is doing, just one dollar can help connect a hungry kid with up to 10 meals,” said Jessica Bomberg, who oversees fundraising for NKH.
She says one in five kids in D.C. don’t know where their next meal will come from.
